NORTH KANSAS CITY BIKE MASTER PLAN
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
A bike-friendly North Kansas City is an important part of a safe, livable, and inviting community. The North Kansas City Bicycle Master Plan is the City’s official policy to support biking in North Kansas City. The Bicycle Master Plan does not provide detailed design guidance for individual projects, rather it is an overview and recommendation for a network of bike improvements that need detailed design and engagement process in the future. The Bicycle Master Plan relates to North Kansas City’s Comprehensive Master Plan’s goal to build a safe and multimodal transportation network. Recommended bicycle facilities vary based on where they occur in the City. Different street widths and traffic patterns require different facilities in order to create a comprehensive system that is safe and comfortable for the majority of riders. Facilities recommended include:
-
Shared lane markings
-
Shared streets and bike boulevards
-
Bike lanes
-
Protected Bike Lanes
-
Shared Use Paths
The engagement process included bike rides, trainings, small focus groups, an online mapping survey for routes and destinations, and public Open House events to provide feedback on the draft network and facilities. The plan provides community goals, technical analysis of roadways, demand and traffic, recommended network, end of trip facilities, funding sources, implementation recommendations and performance measures.
